Troy Scanlan YWC 2024 Recap

Getting the opportunity to attend the Young Workers Conference in Calgary, Alberta Canada was an awesome and eye-opening experience. When I first joined this union, I knew that I was making a good living here at home but wasn’t completely sure how or why. In attending, I was able to get those answers and discover what unionism really was and how it ties into the bigger picture of the Labor Movement we’re all a part of. Some issues in particular that stuck out to me was one, the history of IATSE and its role in the labor movement. And two, the emphasis that was put on our members on being more active politically.

The IATSE Diversity Committee remains steadfast in its mission to foster diversity and inclusion within the entertainment industry. Our goal for 2024 is to enhance work opportunities for underrepresented groups by addressing persistent systemic barriers and biases. Our initiatives this year are targeted and multifaceted, addressing several strategic areas to promote significant industry change. These include strengthening partnerships with industry stakeholders, expanding professional development programs, intensifying advocacy for representation, and investing in targeted research and data analysis.
